Beginning of a journey January 1, 2008

I did get fascinated about writing when I was sixteen years old.

Bits of papers that carried my writings floated all over my home. My dad was the only curious person to read those great writings.

But, shy of facing nice words of encouragement, I kept them in a box, which I used to carry to school, when I was very young. And never allowed anyone to go near the shelf, where the box was housed.

It started overflowing soon.

We didn’t have a hard disc, password protected or secret folders in those days! I started writing on a diary and carried it with me wherever I went!

But, the real freedom came in when I moved out of home for a job. I had my own writing space, my own big almirah to store my writings and I mailed the pieces that I liked, to publishers. When I saw the first piece published in a leading newspaper in the youth section, I couldn’t help flying in my dreams!

Later, the writings took a turn as business writings. I mean – long credit appraisals. No playing around with words, but simple, plain and no – strings – language.

While other colleagues of mine were posting ledger entries in half lines, I was writing ’stories’. Yes, the history of the company, past performance, the details of the credit proposals, the analysis of cost and benefit, the industry profile and the company’s standing . . . Thus the storyteller in me was kept alive.

Thanks to my superiors in my institution, I continued the business writings till I left the job for good!

Then came the real passion out of me. I made the kids around my colony write and bring out a scribble magazine. The amazing creativity of the kids was too contagious that I took to writing again after a short break.

Surprisingly, after an assignment of co-ordinating a cultural event, I was asked to write on the event and before I could realise, I was already writing small reports.

The blogs entered my writing phase. Papers became posts, diary became a blog. The storyteller started her journey as a novice journalist.

It is a solo journey towards learning to write. Learning to write better. Having entered the field a little late, I thought I should put down what I learnt and how I learnt in one place for people like me to refer, learn and add to the content.

I started this blog with a hope that this place will be ‘the’ place for anyone who likes to master the letter ‘J’!
